It’s interesting to note that this is the first actual screenplay credit for both writers, so in a sense they can be considered ‘first timers’ – just a few short years ago, both Boal and Fletcher were Hollywood outsiders. (True Films: 200 Documentaries You Must See Before You Die This is the third version of a guide I have been developing for the past 5 years. It takes the 200 best documentaries I have reviewed on my website True Films and puts them into one handy book. For an explanation of why I bother to order the content of a website into a book see the previous entry. In True Films, I cover only true films: documentaries, factuals, non-fiction, reality-based series, and some instructional how-to. You can get a sense of what I like from the site. I love documentaries that 1) surprise me, and 2) inform me.
Each review is a rave review; that is, I only review films I love and believe others will enjoy. Merely good films are left unmentioned. I also include what no other film review source does: I provide 4 to 5 screen shots from each documentary to give you an idea of what the texture of the film is. And I only review documentaries that can be seen easily on DVD or tape at consumer prices (either as Netflix rentals, legal downloads, or online purchase). Documentaries available only in theaters, or as high-priced 'educational films' are regrettably ignored. Klik na fotku/cover za download knjige: (http://www.mediafire.com/?0qm2oinzjnn).

GET CRIME AND DISSONANCE if you want the deep cuts, the crazy acid jazz, the electroacoustic stuff. There is much more to Ennio Morricone than his soundtracks for spaghetti Westerns.
The moody Italian has managed to create some of the most atmospheric and macabre work in movie music history. This double-disc represents the composer's vast stylistic palette. There are the cannoli cowboy themes from A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but the collection delves into his lyrical 'Chi Mai' from the 1981 film, The Professional, and the spooky choral experiments on the theme to The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (arguably his best work). The first disc is stronger than the second, since the latter is taken up with more lackluster work from such films as The Untouchables and Bugsy. There are some vocal tracks by Joan Baez and a notable one by Domenico Modugno. This two-disc anthology assembled by Mike Patton is, after the spaghetti Western soundtracks and themes, essential Morricone.
Never has his music from the strange films he scored in the 1960s and '70s been showcased in such an original and powerful way. Patton has looked closely into the experimental nature of the maestro and found plenty here to offer as well as to crow about. Many of the scores he chose from would be known only to cineastes of minor and obscure Italian films. Yet, Patton understood that Morricone loved his own process and treated crime and exploitation flicks like L'Anticristo and Forza G with the same delightful sense of adventure that he approached The Godfather and The Mission with. Here, all manner of strangeness is on offer: from psychedelic guitars and tripped-out wordless vocals to sitars, layers and layers of percussion, acid-drenched strings, an Echoplexed celeste, toy pianos, psychotic operatic voices in chorus, and more. And this is no novelty compilation.
It is sequenced with taste and depth. Most of the music here was conducted by the great Bruno Nicolai, and thematically moves from dark to ecstatic to just plain weird in a seamless fashion. In presenting Crime and Dissonance in this manner, Patton has given listeners a much wider view of Morricone not only as a composer, but as a sonic experimentalist. This is one of those must-haves for just about everybody interested in music just off the beaten path enough to conjure strange dreams and perhaps even nightmares. -Thom Jurek, allmusic.com DOWNLOAD: A FISTFUL OF FILM MUSIC (1995) (CRIME AND DISSONANCE (2005) (320kbps. Giorgio Moroder-MIDNIGHT EXPRESS / CAT PEOPLE (1978 /1982) (The last two were Moroder albums, these are two of his best film scores. The Chase track clocking in at over 8 minutes is worth the price of the cd alone. This track strongly indentifies the pop-music style of the time. You don't have to strain your ears to realize the Moroder genius touch and Faltermeyer contributions that Chase sounds hauntingly similar to Donna Summer's I Feel Love and Our Love/Sunset People; of course this is no dumb coincidence.Yet, he avoids turning this into a notorious campy disco soundtrack. It is also comparable to Vangelis' BladeRunner theme (the pulsing futuristic synthesized sound). The next memorable track is Istanbul Blues. It's just that; a song done in blues fashion by a male singer named David Castle whose vocals are light and not at all heavy a la B.B. It's more a blue-eye soul/blues track.
The end track theme is sung by a fascinating female vocalist named Chris Bennett who at times is reminiscent of a Diana Ross protogee with slight more vocal stamina. Some of the other remaining tracks are very haunting and eerie in not just an electronic sense but in an atmospheric way. At times these tracks make you forget it's a soundtrack to an American imprisoned in a Turkish jail. They sound as though they were written for a couple of horror scenes to a sci-fi thriller. The artistry of composer Giorgio Moroder aside, this CD is the only place you can find the original David Bowie vocal for 'Theme from Cat People,' perhaps better known as 'Putting Out Fire With Gasoline.' And that alone makes this CD a must-have: a piece of music that begins with primative-sounding percussion, introduces Bowie at his sultry, sexy best, and then suddenly explodes into one of the most chills-down-your-spine bits of music that you will ever encounter, the personification of. Hunger, desire, and a touch of kink.
Moroder and Bowie make a remarkable combination--it is a great pity they did not do more together--and the recording here is far, far superior to the version of the song included on Bowie's LET'S DANCE. -dudes on amazon.com DOWNLOAD: MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (1978) (CAT PEOPLE (1982) (320kbps. This album is actually fucking killer -Ian This disc is a re-release of the 1981 Virgin edition of Tangerine Dream's music for the movie 'Thief', Michael Mann's film adaptation of Frank Hohimer's book, 'The Home Invaders'. It doesn't contain the film's entire soundtrack music by any means: nor, indeed, is all of the music on the CD to be found in the film! The reasons are simple: much of the film's most powerful music-that which accompanies the scenes 'He's beeping in good', 'Into the Shaft' and 'Car Lot Showdown'-had already been released on the band's 1979 album 'Force Majeure', as parts of the track `Thru Metamorphic Rocks'. Consequently, almost 15 minutes of soundtrack is represented on this disc in a shorter (5 minute) remix, `Igneous', which uses a characteristic cue chord sequence from the film as an intro to the flanged percussion pulse overlaid with a new raw-edged guitar line.
The movie's closing music is also absent from the CD: this is the track `Confrontation' by Craig Safan. Although originally present on the Elektra soundtrack release of the movie, Virgin did not bother obtaining the license for its inclusion here, as this was intended as a pure Tangerine Dream disc, not as a soundtrack album. Several dodges have been applied to pad the disc out to a reasonable length (although it is still quite short). Firstly, the 'San Diego Reverie' scene's music is included twice (originally starting each side of the vinyl disc, it appears as tracks 1 and 5 here) in only slightly differing guises (`Beach Theme' & `Beach Scene').
Secondly, the remaining soundtrack material is expanded into longer versions than used in the film, and finally a couple of additional tracks have been composed which draw on musical ideas used only briefly elsewhere or which conjure up the moods of some of the film's scenes. The result is some 40 minutes of material, often close to the actual film soundtrack but at other times merely suggestive of it, presented in an order that makes musical sense, rather than following any sequence relevant to the film. For all its alterations, though, this music comes across as every bit as powerfully stark as the movie. In many ways this album is more of a tribute to the film than a copy of its soundtrack, but probably is all the more potent as a result.
It was a major chart success in its day and remains an impressive achievement even now. -Steve Benner 'Stonegnome', amazon.com DOWNLOAD: Tangerine Dream-THIEF OST (1981) (256kbps.

(Rendering Reality: A Robert Zemeckis Profile (“In my family there was no art,” revealed Chicago-born filmmaker Robert Zemeckis. “There was no music, there were no books, there was no theatre. I grew up in a very working class, lower middle class, blue collar life. The only thing I had that was inspirational was television – and it actually was.” Another thing the young Zemeckis found himself drawn towards was the 8 m.m. Home movie camera systems owned by his father and his uncles; he became fascinated with the ability of cinema to manipulate his emotions. “Any time there was a family gathering, I’d pull out the screen and the projector.
Then it got more and more elaborate, trying to synch up sounds, which was my biggest thing. I was really trying to figure out how to do that, and then, ultimately, making these 8 m.m. I started to do a lot of stop motion animation, puppet animation-type things, and blowing things up with fire crackers and elaborate special effects.

Secrets of The Shining (Or How Faking the Moon Landings Nearly Cost Stanley Kubrick his Marriage and his Life. (For more information on how Stanley Kubrick faked the Apollo moon landings go here (The Shining is surely Stanley Kubrick's most misunderstood masterpiece. I use the word 'masterpiece' guardedly because I have never really thought that The Shining was a very good film.
At the time, in 1980 when I first saw it, I didn't like it at all. The way that Kubrick threw out so much of Stephen King's great source material and replaced it with a lot of things that just didn't seem to make any sense, really bothered me. Hopefully, before I am finished with this essay, the reader will see it is only when Kubrick dramatically alters the script from Stephen King's novel that we can begin to understand what Stanley Kubrick is trying to tell us in his version of The Shining.
It should be understood from the beginning that The Shining is Stanley Kubrick's most personal film (outside of, possibly, Eyes Wide Shut). Before we are done here it will be easy to see that Kubrick was only using Stephen King's novel as a launching pad (excuse the pun) to be able to tell a completely different story under the guise of making a film based on a best-selling novel. He did this for a very important reason - mainly to save his life.:eek. (Due to the amount of posters being reprinted these days the Alamo Drafthouse part of my collection is becoming one of my favorite areas to collect along with other silk screen posters.
These posters are near impossible to fake and are printed on higher quality card stock. They are limited in their print run making them more valuable to an investor. The ink used on these posters is usually top notch with some of the posters having metallic inks on them. As most people who collect these know, you really have to see one of these posters in person to truly appreciate them and some of them you have to actually feel. Francis Ford Coppola's epic & unproduced script, MEGALOPOLIS, is now available Three of the greatest films of all time were made by one guy, in one seven-year span.
In 1974, two of the nominees for Best Picture were directed by that same guy. Francis Ford Coppola (Apocalypse Now, The Godfather films, come on, you know who he is) has been coasting on it ever since. That's why no list of unmade masterpieces would be complete without Megalopolis, Coppola's pet project about a futuristic New York that's had pretty much every Oscar winner of the last decade attached to it at some point or another (including Nicolas Cage, Russell Crowe, and even some talented actors like Robert De Niro, Paul Newman, and Kevin Spacey). This, dear readers, was the mythical Good New Coppola Movie that Hollywood, and America, had been waiting three decades for.
They've probably already etched the name of this thing onto a whole box of awards, just waiting for Coppola to actually make the damn film. Why it didn't get made: Too ambitious, too expensive, maybe too much to undertake for an aging, talent-atrophying Coppola. They did some shoots in New York at some points, but were put on hold by 9/11; then the film's distributor went broke.
It just seems like one of those cursed projects. And while we're on the subject: George Lucas, not Coppola, was originally hired to direct Apocalypse Now. Considering what a drawn-out torture the Apocalypse production turned out to be, there's a good chance that in that alternate universe, Star Wars never happened. Imdb (Biggie and Tupac Far and away Broomfield's best effort to date Anyone expecting a tawdry, shoddy sleazefest along the lines of 'Kurt and Courtney' should be pleasantly surprised here - this is an excellent film. For a start, the conspiracy theory explored here is a far more credible one, and the evidence Broomfield turns up is very convincing in places. One has to wonder how genuine Broomfield's 'camera on at all times' approach is, how much was created at the editing stage - he appears to get away with some very transgressive behaviour here on the basis of sheer amateurism, though it is clear the man has balls of iron. He thoughtlessly wanders through some of the worst neighbourhoods in LA and New York - in one classic scene his cameraman deserts him out of sheer fear, leaving him to manage a ludicrous prison interview with despotic Death Row records overlord Suge Knight alone.
Irony being lost on Americans for the most part, Broomfield also manages to get away with some outrageous cheek- for instance asking Knight to deliver his 'message for the kids' in a tone of smirking condescension. For the heads, there is some great, rare footage on offer- a teenage Biggie ripping up a street corner freestyle battle, hoods dancing on their cars at his funeral, an electrifying Snoop Dog calling out New York at the notorious 95 source awards.plenty in there for the hip hop fan, along with some vintage Biggie and (for some reason) Gang Starr on the soundtrack.
Broomfield manages to talk to every major player in the drama, with the notable exception of Afeni Shakur- which also explains the lack of 2Pacs' music on the soundtrack. Despite its grim subject matter, there is much humour on offer here. In short, this is the best 'rockumentary' in a very long time, and one that lingers in the mind for some time afterwards. Something of a triumph. (THE COVER STORY: The Dirty Harry soundtracks have been on many people's wish-lists for many years and up until recently remained unreleased. Schifrin's wife Donna setup Aleph Records in 1997 to showcase the work of her composer, arranger and conductor husband, Lalo Schifrin. The Name 'Aleph' derives from a Louis Borges short story of the same name, which symbolizes all points in the universe coming together in one space. Although the labels intention is to make available the work of Lalo Schifrin, an exception was made for composer Jerry Fielding so that the complete Dirty Harry scores could be released by the label (Schifrin wasn't available to score The Enforcer.) Regular visitors will know that I previously designed a set of custom covers for this series which included a bootleg score for The Dead Pool (it hadn't had an official release at the time.) Now, with the eventual release of the score by Aleph, we have the 'complete' Dirty Harry collection available for the first time ever! This re-ignited my interest in revisiting those previous customs, which I had never been very happy with.
I decided to go down the route of designing them as if I worked for the Aleph artwork department, trying to give them the type of covers I would like as a customer buying them. The finished products (featured below) will, I hope, be worthy of replacing the originals with. I've tried to be as respectful to Aleph as I can by keeping all logo's and release numbers, even recreating barcodes! All information from the original booklets has been reproduced in full! There is also some additional text included to hopefully improve overall reading enjoyment.
The original lacklustre images have been replaced with a collection of more dynamic and interesting pictures courtesy of the vast Ennioman archives, so a big thanks to him for helping out with those. THE DISC STORY: The 'Dirty Harry Definitive Collection' includes all six official releases from Aleph Records (Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, The Dead Pool and The Dirty Harry Anthology) plus two bonus discs. The first entitled 'Sudden Impact and the best of Dirty Harry' contains the complete recording of the 1983 vinyl only release of the same name. This was originally released on Clint Eastwood's short-lived 'Viva' label. The second bonus disc includes film versions of the themes as extracted from the DVD tracks for this collection by Dimich, as well as a few more surprises! I hope this collection lives up to its 'definitive' title because as far as I'm aware, it contains everything that is currently available from every release! Foote, 'Clint Eastwood: Evolution of a Filmmaker' Praeger 2008-12-30 ISBN: 031335247X 224 pages PDF 1,1 MB Now a two-time Academy Award winner for best director, twice winner of the Directors Guild of America Award for best director, and recipient of countless other critics prizes and nominations in multiple capacities, Clint Eastwood stands alongside Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as one of the finest directors working in modern cinema. Here, John Foote examines the long, impressive, and unlikely film career of a man who fought against expectations to forge his own way and become one of this generation's finest filmmakers. Each chapter examines a different film, beginning with Play Misty for Me (1971) and High Plains Drifter (1973) and extending to his 21st-century films Space Cowboys (2000), Blood Work (2002), Mystic River (2003), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), and Changeling (2008). This book is, in the author's own words, a study of how Eastwood managed to quietly get to this level—and a celebration of his gifts as an artist. Eastwood has evolved not only as a director, but also as an actor, a screenwriter, a producer, and a score composer, to become one of the most revered figures in Hollywood.
Perhaps it is because he started out in Hollywood with such little influence on the final product that he now demonstrates such a strong desire to collaborate with others and provide help wherever he can. In addition to casting off his reputation as a hack and accumulating two Oscar nominations for Best Actor over the past 15 years, he has guided other actors to no less than three Academy Award wins. The executives love him because he has made them money over the years—occasionally even making one for them in exchange for financial backing on other projects. Critics love him because of the care he takes in creating his films.
Audiences love him because he has never lost his sense of entertainment, even as his artistry has matured. Klik na fotku/cover za download knjige: ((http://www.mediafire.com/?ynx0rilgxcz). Bloodlines: The Cinema of Kathryn Bigelow In the wake of numerous critics groups and the Directors Guild of America, the buzz has become a deafening roar: Kathryn Bigelow is favored to become the first woman to win an Oscar as Best Director. The question we at Parallax View are asking is: what took so long? Bigelow has been making tough, rich, evocative movies for decades, too few in our estimation, and too often dismissed for the visceral, aggressive qualities that make them so compelling. It’s taken The Hurt Locker to remind the critical echo chamber that Bigelow is one of the most provocative and visceral cinematic artists spinning stories on screen. Join us as we celebrate this dark daughter of Hawks and Hitchcock.

It was the iconic opening shot in Stanley Kubrick's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, where we are introduced to our anti-hero Alex in an extreme close-up of his face, a smirking landscape of human evil that never blinks.
We then slowly PULL BACK to reveal the Korovo Milk Bar, the surroundings that fosters said evil with its retro-futuristic decay. Ever since then, I've been obsessed with the extended take in movies. Let's be clear. The extended take is often mistaken for the tracking shot. According to Wikipedia the tracking shot is, 'a segment in which the camera is mounted on a wheeled platform that is pushed on rails while the picture is being taken. Tracking shots cannot include complex pivoting movements, aerial shots or crane shots.' So what is an extended take?
The extended take is, 'an uninterrupted shot in a film which lasts much longer than the conventional editing pace either of the film itself or of films in general, usually lasting several minutes. It can be used for dramatic and narrative effect if done properly, and in moving shots is often accomplished through the use of a dolly or stedicam.' The extended take is a cinematic hire-wire act that pushes the director, actors, cinematographer, art department, sound design, and every other department to their limits.
They take a very long time to set-up, and are very easy to mess up. The longer the take, the more pressure is added to get it right. This list is, in my opinion, the 20 greatest extended takes in movies.
I intentionally did not make reference to movies like TIMECODE, RUSSIAN ARK, PVC-1, and NOKTA which are products of the digital filmmaking age, features entirely shot in a single take. I believe those movies are a genre in and of themselves and deserve a separate discussion. There are several amazing extended takes that I would have included in this list but was unable to because they are not available online to view, like the ones in ATONEMENT and JCVD. I felt it would be unfair to make reference to something visually when I could not offer it up for review. But I do recommend checking those films out on DVD if you haven't done so.

(Absurdity & Carnage: A Coen Brothers Profile (Part 1) (Trevor Hogg profiles the careers of filmmaking siblings the Coen brothers in the first of a four part feature. Using a Super 8 camera, Joel and his younger brother Ethan were inspired to remake the Hollywood movies being broadcasted on television; their naivety about motion picture production did not hinder their innovative spirit when shooting a new version of The Naked Prey (1966). “We had very weird special effects in that film,” reminisced Joel Coen of the childhood project entitled Zeimers in Zambia. “We actually had a parachute drop – a shot of an airplane going overhead, then a miniature, then cut to a close-up of the guy against the white sheet as it hit the ground.” Their enthusiasm for the craft of filmmaking led the brotherly duo to venture into the realm of scriptwriting.
“The first one was called Coast to Coast,” stated Joel. “We never really did anything with it. It was sort of a screwball-comedy.” The unproduced tale was a product of the brothers’ surrealist sense of humour; it dealt with Chinese communists creating twenty-eight clones of the legendary physicist Albert Einstein. After their post-secondary studies, the two siblings from Minneapolis, Minnesota reunited in New York; they renewed their creative partnership which proved to be so intuitive that upon meeting the brothers, an interviewer wittingly remarked that the Coens were “joined at the quip”. Conard - The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers Publisher: University Press of Kentucky 2008-12-12 ISBN: 081312526X PDF 304 pages 1.20 MB In 2008 No Country for Old Men won the Academy Award for Best Picture, adding to the reputation of filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, who were already known for pushing the boundaries of genre. They had already made films that redefined the gangster movie, the screwball comedy, the fable, and the film noir, among others. No Country is just one of many Coen brothers films to center on the struggles of complex characters to understand themselves and their places in the strange worlds they inhabit. To borrow a phrase from Barton Fink, all Coen films explore “the life of the mind” and show that the human condition can often be simultaneously comic and tragic, profound and absurd. In The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers, editor Mark T. Conard and other noted scholars explore the challenging moral and philosophical terrain of the Coen repertoire. Several authors connect the Coens’ most widely known plots and characters to the shadowy, violent, and morally ambiguous world of classic film noir and its modern counterpart, neo-noir.
As these essays reveal, Coen films often share noir’s essential philosophical assumptions: power corrupts, evil is real, and human control of fate is an illusion. In Fargo, not even Minnesota’s blankets of snow can hide Jerry Lundegaard’s crimes or brighten his long, dark night of the soul.
Coen films that stylistically depart from film noir still bear the influence of the genre’s prevailing philosophical systems. The tale of love, marriage, betrayal, and divorce in Intolerable Cruelty transcends the plight of the characters to illuminate competing theories of justice. Even in lighter fare, such as Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski, the comedy emerges from characters’ journeys to the brink of an amoral abyss. However, the Coens often knowingly and gleefully subvert conventions and occasionally offer symbolic rebirths and other hopeful outcomes.
At the end of The Big Lebowski, the Dude abides, his laziness has become a virtue, and the human comedy is perpetuating itself with the promised arrival of a newborn Lebowski. The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers sheds new light on these cinematic visionaries and their films’ stirring philosophical insights. From Blood Simple to No Country for Old Men, the Coens’ films feature characters who hunger for meaning in shared human experience—they are looking for answers. A select few of their protagonists find affirmation and redemption, but for many others, the quest for answers leads, at best, only to more questions. (html) Josh Levine - The Coen Brothers: The Story of Two American Filmmakers Publisher: ECW Press 2000-08-01 ISBN: PDF 178 pages 11.43 MB A terrified woman plunges a knife through the hand of her pursuer. A leftwing playwright turns to the woman in his bed, only to find a river of blood.
A baby, left in the middle of the highway, smiles happily. A professional killer stuffs his partner into a woodchipper while a pregnant cop pulls her gun. Welcome to that Coen Brothers feeling.
With the smash success of Fargo (winner of two major Academy Awards), the filmmaking team of Joel and Ethan Coen finally received the recognition they deserved. But well before that the two brothers were writing and directing terrific films -- from the film-noir thriller Blood Simple, to the comedy Raising Arizona, to the gangster epic Miller's Crossing, to the bizarre Barton Fink. With each film they have surprised fans and critics alike, always refusing to repeat themselves or compromise their independence. Their upcoming George Clooney film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, due out in October 2000, is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. While still in their early twenties, Joel and Ethan Coen raised the money for their first film by knocking on the doors of the wealthy in their native Minnesota.
Starring an unknown actress named Frances McDormand (who would later become Joel's wife) it was an art-house hit and allowed the brothers to make Raising Arizona with Nicolas Cage and another Coen brothers' discovery, Holly Hunter. But despite their high reputation, the brothers would not make another financially successful picture for years. Were their films just too offbeat and intellectual?
And then came Fargo. Here is the story of how two middle-class Minnesota boys have come to write, shoot, and direct some of the most gruesome, exhilarating, and funny films of our time. Imdb (Brando The Documentary As originally screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, at the Cannes Film Festival, and on Turner Classic Movies, the mammoth, epic-length documentary Brando chronicles in encyclopedic detail (and with a consistently reverent overtone) the life and career of the man widely regarded as the most formidable American actor of the 20th century - famous for not only reshaping, but reinventing the craft of film acting and teaching audiences how to view a motion picture performance. Divided into chronological, thematically-unified segments, the film first treats Marlon Brando’s dysfunctional upbringing - his alcoholic mother, his abusive father, his stint at a military academy - before charting his acting tutelage at the behest of Stella Adler and his early cinematic and theatrical roles, including work for Elia Kazan, who famously made many aggressive (and unsuccessful) attempts to discipline the headstrong actor onscreen. Throughout this segment, many Hollywood A-list actors appear - among them, Al Pacino, Johnny Depp and Robert Duvall - expostulating at length on Brando’s influence over their approaches to performance, and attempting with great effort to define the elusive style known as 'method acting' that Brando helped to create.
The second half of the documentary moves into Brando’s career during the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, covering the production of The Godfather, the actor’s noteworthy political activism, and his tumultuous personal life. Francis Ford Coppola, who of course teamed with Brando for the first Godfather installment and for Apocalypse Now, is noticeably absent from the proceedings. The result is a fresh and memorable portrait of both the man and his work which highlights the remarkable and enduring contribution to American, and world, cinema of this ever fascinating, Oscar-winning director.Author Brian Neve examines Kazan’s key artistic collaborations--with actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean and playwrights such as Tennessee Williams and John Steinbeck--and analyzes his cinematic style, from visual techniques to recurrent themes in films such as A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront. He takes an in-depth look at the controversial Congressional testimony which Kazan gave to HUAC in 1952, for which he was ostracized by many, and which often overshadowed his cinematic achievements. Neve also assesses Kazan and his films in a wider political and cultural context, tracing the evolution of the filmmaking process through the changing role of the studio, the Red Scares of the late 1940s, and the censorship debates of the 1950s and 1960s.

(Elsaesser, Metropolis (BFI Film Classics) (BFI 2000 ISBN 96 Pages PDF 3 MB Illustrated Metropolis (1925) is a monumental work. When it was made it was Germany's most expensive feature film, a canvas for director Fritz Lang's increasingly extravagant ambitions (it took sixteen months to film). Lang, inspired by the skyline of New York, created a whole new vision of cities. One of the greatest works of science fiction, the film also tells human stories about love and family.
In this book, Thomas Elsaesser explores the cultural phenomenon of Metropolis: its different versions (there is no definitive one), its changing meanings, its role as a storehouse or database of the 20th century. A Philosophy of Cinematic Art (Publisher: Cambridge University Press English 2010 ISBN-10: 338 Pages PDF 18 Mb A Philosophy of Cinematic Art is a systematic study of cinema as an art form, showing how the medium conditions fundamental features of cinematic artworks. It discusses the status of cinema as an art form, whether there is a language of film, realism in cinema, cinematic authorship, intentionalist and constructivist theories of interpretation, cinematic narration, the role of emotions in responses to films, the possibility of identification with characters, and the nature of the cinematic medium. Groundbreaking in its coverage of a wide range of contemporary cinematic media, it analyses not only traditional photographic films, but also digital cinema, and a variety of interactive cinematic works, including videogames. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book examines the work of leading film theorists and philosophers of film, and develops a powerful framework with which to think about cinema as an art. (David Howard, Mabley, 'The Tools of Screenwriting: A Writer's Guide to the Craft and Elements of a Screenplay' (St. Martin's Griffin 1995 ISBN: 298 pages PDF 3,9 MB In The Tools of Screenwriting, David Howard and Mabley illuminate the essential elements of cinematic storytelling, and reveal the central principles that all good screenplays share.
The authors address questions of dramatic structure, plot, dialogue, character development, setting, imagery, and other crucial topics as they apply to the special art of filmmaking. Howard and Mabley also demonstrate how, on a practical level, the tools of screenwriting work in sixteen notable films, including Citizen Cane, E.T., One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Rashomon, The Godfather, North by Northwest, Chinatown, and sex, lies, and videotape. Filmed in the classic Ford film settings of Monument Valley and the location of the former back lot of Twentieth Century Fox, as well as in the den and trophy room of Ford himself, the story goes back to Ford's start in the silent era up through the early 1960's.
It is interspersed with memorable clips from such classics as Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, as well as footage from Ford's wartime career, which includes performances from such stalwarts as Ward Bond, Andy Devine (who also cameos during a conversation between Ford and Wayne), Maureen O'Hara, Thomas MItchell, Natalie Wood, Walter Brennan, Ken Curtis, and John Carradine. The presentation is filled with fascinating anecdotes, including practical jokes, and most notably, Ford's reminiscence of a long conversation that he once had with Wyatt Earp, who described the shootout at the OK Corral in such detail that he even drew a map of the site.
The film quality is quite poor and does not compare well with the original that had been aired on television back in the 1990's, but the grainy visuals (apparently captured with a video camera from projected film) are soon forgotten as the story unfolds. To modern audiences, it may seem a bit hokey, but it is a wonderful reflection of the cinematic reality of the world of John Wayne and 'Pappy' John Ford in which the focus is not on history as is was but how it should have been.
